Newsletter

I’m interested in writing within the tensions of our humanity with the both and: our joy and our grief, beauty and brokenness, courage and fear, celebration and rage, and everything in between.

My hope is that my writing has the ability to connect to what lies at the core of being human. Whether I am writing poetry, a newsletter, or an essay, my writing aims to be honest, attentive, and centered around connection. May these words housed here meet you and encourage you.

What Are the Compilations?

Every few months or so I release a prompt on social media. I invite anyone to write for each prompt. There is no required genre, word-limit, and people can submit as many pieces as they'd like. I share a deadline and people email me at bnfrederking@gmail.com the writing piece(s) they'd like to submit for the prompt. The writers can choose to include their name or to submit a writing piece anonymously, if it makes them feel more comfortable.

After I have received all the submitted writing pieces, I compile them together into one blog post and share it across social media and here!

The Story Behind the Compilations

While I was in a freshman in college, I loved getting to know new people more than anything. I was fascinated by learning more about the people I was meeting and I had a desire to learn more about people's worlds and thoughts. At the time, I was blogging often and found it to be a beautiful way to connect with others. I then had the idea of using my blog not only as a place for me to share my thoughts, but for others to as well. My first prompt was simple: What gets your heart excited?

What started out as a freshman year passion project turned into a long-standing rhythm of my years. As I read back through years and years of compilations, I can remember receiving all the different emails of writing people have sent in. It has connected me to strangers, old friends, new friends, colleagues, and family.

With each compilation, I get to bear witness to the beauty, courage, and vulnerability that comes along with writing and sharing writing. I get to see the ways other people's words weave together to create a larger story. It's magic to me.

"Bailey’s writing has been an inspiration to me since before I even knew her well. I remember my Freshman year of college when she did a writing prompt and compilation on the word freedom. I remember so vividly seeing that prompt on social media and confiding in the shelter of my journal with pages and pages on what the word freedom meant to me. I never shared my thoughts for her prompt, I wasn’t in a space yet where I felt freedom in sharing my words with others. For my whole life words had been my personal safe and sacred place, and I had not let many with me yet into that place. But–I do remember writing. Her gentle and steadfast love for writing and the freedom that comes from it spurred a fire in my heart. It helped me take steps to share my thoughts, even if those thoughts were just to myself."
